David Sedaris is a noted American raconteur, essayist, humorist, play write and radio personality. He first came to national attention when National Public Radio broadcast his essay, "The Santaland Diaries", an account of his time as an elf at Macy's department store. A bestselling author, Sedaris has published eight collections of his essays and travels widely to perform his works live. He draws on his personal experiences-from his quirky Greek-American family, to living abroad in France and England with his partner Hugh- to craft witty and hilarious pieces. In addition to contributing to magazines such as The New Yorker, Sedaris also has collaborated with his sister comedienne and actress Amy Sedaris as "The Talent Family" and is known for his performances on NPR's "This American Life".
Sedaris grew up solidly middle class. As a child, his family relocated from New York to Raleigh North Carolina. For the older children of the family, this proved to be something of a culture shock. On his father's side of the family, Sedaris has strong ties to Greece. His stories of growing up with his Greek grandmother, who spoke no English, are hilarious. As a young adult, Sedaris visited Greece.
